Reading the live values

Analog sticks report between -1.000 and 1.000 on each axis. Resting values are rarely exactly zero — a few thousandths of movement is ordinary sensor noise rather than a fault.

Triggers usually report 0.000 to 1.000. Some pads expose them as simple on/off buttons, which shows as an instant jump instead of smooth travel. That is a mapping difference, not damage.

Standard and non-standard mappings

When a pad reports the standard mapping, named controls are reliable and the diagram matches your hardware. When it does not, this tester deliberately shows raw button numbers instead of guessing which physical control they belong to.

Frequently asked questions

What is a joystick tester used for?
Confirming that every input a controller sends actually arrives: buttons that respond, sticks that move smoothly, and triggers that read their full range.
Why do the axis numbers never sit at exactly 0.000?
Analog sensors always report a little noise. It only matters when the resting offset is large or steady in one direction, which the drift test measures properly.
Can I test two controllers at once?
Yes. Connect up to four and use the Player selectors in the status panel to switch between them.
Does this work with an adapter or arcade stick?
If the adapter presents itself as a standard gamepad, yes. Unusual devices often report a non-standard mapping, so you will see numbered buttons rather than named ones.
