What is controller deadzone?
A deadzone is the amount of stick movement a game throws away before it reacts. It is the single most useful setting for living with a slightly worn controller.
Why deadzones exist
Analog sticks never rest perfectly still, so without a deadzone every game would receive tiny constant input. The deadzone is a circle around centre where movement is treated as no movement at all.
The trade-off is direct. A small deadzone keeps slow, fine aiming responsive but lets drift through. A large one hides drift completely but removes your gentlest inputs.
Choosing a value
Measure your resting noise first, then add a small safety margin. That is exactly what the recommended minimum on the deadzone page does, using your controller's own readings rather than a generic figure.
Common presets are 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12 and 15 percent. Healthy pads usually sit between 2 and 8; a worn pad may need 10 or more, which is a sign the stick module is nearing the end of its life.
Deadzone is not a repair
Raising the deadzone does not fix a stick. It only tells the software to ignore the faulty signal, which is often good enough to keep playing for months.
Games also apply their own deadzone shapes — circular, square or scaled curves — so the same controller can feel different from game to game even with identical settings.
